On Aug. 19, Ríos was named the inaugural Arizona Poet Laureate, a position he will hold for two years. Ríos is currently a Regents’ Professor and Katharine C. Turner Endowed Chair in English at Arizona State University.

Ríos’ appearance was his second public reading since being appointed on Aug. 19 to the position, created in 2012 by Arizona State Senate Bill 1348. Arizona is the 43rd state to appoint a poet laureate, and the position has a term of two years.
