It’s a dog’s life in the modern Army. Rebel Mittelstadt, guest presenter for K-9 Veterans Day, holds up a picture of soldier Chris Chiasson feeding dogs of war in Afghanistan on Thursday, March 13, at Sedona Community Center. When a terrorist tried to blow up a barraks, the dog on the right, Target, was injured after saving the lives of 50 soldiers from the explosion.

K-9 units have been used officialy by U.S. military forces since March 13, 1942. The Sedona Community Center recognized these efforts by celebrating K-9 Veterans Day on Thursday, March 13.

The holiday is one of 136 pet holidays in the U.S. Though some think of the K-9 dog as a German shepherd, many breeds have been used in the force since its inception.

Gloria Rodriguez, an animal activist and author, hosted the event, which featured retired Army 1st Sgt. Rick Kimberly, Linda Brecher, one of the founders of the Sedona Pet Food Bank, and Rebel Mittelstadt from Puppy Rescue Mission.
