On Wednesday, June 11, a groundbreaking ceremony began work on a new statue in the Jack Jamesen Memorial Park called “Cornerstone of Freedom.”Lisa Dahl, Barbara Litrell, Galea Jill, Luke Sefton, Dave Blauert, Marilyn Chilicas, Cynthia Richmond, Claudia Ault, Desiree Brackin and Elyse Otto, from left, break new ground Wednesday, June 9, in the spot at Jack Jamesen Memorial Park where James N. Muir’s bronze sculpture, “Cornerstone of Freedom,” will be placed. The dedication will be Sunday, Sept. 21.

The project is coordinated by the Friends of Jack Jamesen Memorial Park Honoring Women Committee. The statue was created by local sculptor James N. Muir.

The statue, which portrays powerful female symbols in American culture, Lady Justice and Lady Liberty, will be surrounded on either end with walls that will hold up to 300 area women’s names. There is no deadline to apply for a name to be engraved, names can be added until the walls are filled. The statue honors all women and as such will not require names that are requested to be put up to have any service record.

Cynthia Richmond, one of the committee members who organized the groundbreaking, said she was proud to be a part of the project.

O.K. - Fifteen plus years ago James Muir creates "Cornerstone of Freedom" to commemorate the principles of Liberty and Justice which are embodied in our Constitution. Despite the fact that 2 female faces appear on it representing the Ladies Liberty and Justice, I fail to see how a copy of this sculpture really fits as a tribute to our women , to whom as Mothers, Healers, Teachers, etc., we owe everything. Perhaps I'm not seeing something here.
