Sedona artist Frank Marquette has led a productive life to date — constructing hyperrealistic environments for homes, film and theme parks — at one point wanting to be the next Walt Disney.Frank Marquette sits in one of his faux bois — French for “false wood” — chairs at the West Sedona gallery where they are on display. The chairs are hand-sculpted from concrete to look like wood. Marquette used his craft in building sets for “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy.

Now, though, he’s happy to be himself, with his wife and his new creative passion, which still makes use of his ability to make artificial materials look like products of nature with his custom-made faux bois outdoor furniture — objects made from steel frames covered in concrete and carved to like real wood.

“I discovered faux bois — pronounced ‘foe bwah’ — and one or two artists that were producing staggering realism,” Marquette said. “I decided this would be my expression and that it would serve my need for demonstrating the unlikely unity of things. Faux bois requires design, engineering and fine art sculpture to deliver story-like furniture that literally lasts a lifetime.”

Reflecting on his career to date, Marquette admitted that when he came out of high school, he was more interested in being in front of the camera rather than building the things that would be in the background.
