It might not be laser eye surgery but there will be a way for the public to help people see better at the city of Sedona’s Fourth of July laser show.Dr. Serge Wright, an optometrist and a member of the Lions Club in Sedona, will be selling raffle tickets during the Sedona’s Fourth of July laser show celebration held at Sedona Red Rock High School. Proceeds will fund eye glasses and hearing aids for the needy in the community.

The Oak Creek Lions Club will be holding a Fight for Sight raffle to benefit area needy at the show Friday, July 4, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Sedona Red Rock High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for a single ticket and $10 for three. Money raised through the raffle will go toward purchases of eyeglasses and hearing aids for those who cannot afford their own.

Dr. Serge Wright, a local optometrist and Lions Club member for the last 30 years, said that the club has roots in this cause.

“The Lions have a long history of helping the blind. The Lions were charged by Helen Keller to be the knights of the blind,” Wright said.

Keller was a deaf and blind woman who was an activist for the sensory disabled until her death in 1968.

This is the first raffle the Lions have done during the Fourth of July celebration but it is not their first involvement with the show.
“The Lions used to sponsor the whole celebration back when it had fireworks,” Wright said. The last time Sedona had a fireworks show was in 2002.
