The Sedona Public Library’s 2014 summer reading program continues through the month of July, and on Tuesday, July 8, children’s author Matthew Henry Hall welcomed children to a writing workshop for kids.Matthew Henry Hall looks over Riley Whittaker, left, Felicia Foldes, Sonia Lee and Cisco Bekele’s drawings of their cryptid creatures they are creating in the quiet study room at Sedona Public Library. Hall, an author of children’s books, held a writing workshop for children that focuses on creating cryptids, which are fictional plants and animals.
Hall, author of “Phoebe and Chub,” said that the event was his first attempt at such a program, and admitted that he was slightly nervous about what to expect.

“It’s a brand new thing, so now I’m really nervous,” he joked. “This is the inaugural voyage.”

Hall explained that authors typically have to find interesting ways to get themselves and their work out into the public eye by doing these sorts of events, but he added that at this point he isn’t even doing it to promote his books.

“When you publish a book, it’s not like this amazing thing where you’re a millionaire and can just retire, so one of the things that many authors do to promote their book and also make a little bit of money is go to schools and go to libraries and do a little presentation,” he said. “I don’t really sell my books anymore, mainly because it’s just complicated to have a bunch of books and if they don’t sell, then you have a bunch of books that you’re sitting on.”

The writing workshop focused on creating “cryptids,” which was a relatively new topic for Hall, and he said he got the idea from a book he had been reading by another author.
