The Sedona Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading Program on Saturday, May 31 at 11 a.m. with a “Gross Science” program by science entertainer Mark Carter.Mark Carter, the “Science Guy,” tells a group of small children and their parents on Saturday, May 31, about the gross stuff that the human body does as part of the Summer Reading Program at the Sedona Public Library in West Sedona.

Carter played to a packed Si Birch Community Room, where he taught kids about all the disgusting facts they might not know about various parts of the human body, from noses to eyes to armpits.

Kids laughed and squirmed as Carter told them about the tiny microorganisms that might live in their eyelashes and the bacteria and fungi that can grow in sweaty armpits and feet and in dirty mouths, all with the help of cartoonish visual aids, comedy props and puppetry.

“You may not know this, but your nose drains into your mouth,” Carter said. “There’s mucous — also called snot — and it drains into your mouth.”

“Ew!” cried out several children in the audience.
