Over the holiday weekend, Friday, May 23, to Sunday, May 25, Yavapai College Film School graduates showed some final, bright rays during the final student Shorts Film Festival at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

The Sedona Film School, formerly known as the Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking, is set to “sunset” after this year, as Yavapai College cuts costs, classes and shifts its programming away from Sedona to its campus in Prescott.

On Friday, the public could mingle with filmmakers at a costume gala.

Viewers could see former festival winners’ films on Saturday morning, with filmmakers in attendance giving a Q&A after the short films — 10 to 15 minutes — were screened.

Filmmakers who stood on stage and talked about their 2013 award-winning films were  Ben Fama Jr., Taylor Camarot, Ali Nidzorgiski and Alexander Finden.

The four explained different camera techniques, the trends they saw in the industry, as well as their current plans, which all tied into film, even if indirectly, such as Finden’s biological research, which ties into his passion for underwater nature documentaries.
