The sport of kings will soon be returning to Sedona.Dana Rene, a bartender at Relics Restaurant and Roadhouse, serves drinks to thirsty customers. The Sedona City Council approved a request by Turf Paradise on behalf of Relics Restaurant and Roadhouse for approval to obtain an off-track parimutuel wagering license from the Arizona Department of Racing.

During its July 22 meeting, the Sedona City Council approved an off-track parimutuel wagering license to Phoenix-based Turf Paradise on behalf of Relics Roadhouse and Restaurant. The vote passed 6-1 with Mayor Rob Adams the dissenting vote.

David Johnson, vice president of Turf Paradise, appeared before the council and said the license will be issued to them and if for some reason Relics were to be sold, the license is non-transferable. He said the license must be approved by both the council and the Arizona Racing Commission.

In addition, Johnson said customers will be betting on races at Turf Paradise as well as those from around the country, which will allow year-round betting. Even though a recent state bill passed that allows bets to be made over the phone, those at Relics will be done in person.

The license for Relics expires Sunday, May 31. At that time, a new three-year licensing cycle will begin. Johnson said that at any point the city is unhappy with the arrangement, the license can be pulled.
