Jayson Coil has 20 years of experience fighting fires. That experience comes in handy as battalion chief for the Sedona Fire District.Battalion Chief Jayson Coil, with the Sedona Fire District, uses his photography to train firefighters in positioning and control, such as with the Slide Fire. Coil has been with SFD for nearly two decades, and has served on incident management teams for some of the nation’s most complex fires.

The son of a U.S. Forest Service administrative officer, Coil grew up throughout the mountainous regions of the country, from Washington and Oregon to California.

His interactions with his father’s coworkers gave him his first glimpse into the life of a firefighter.

His first passion, though, wasn’t firefighting.

“I definitely was more into being a paramedic than being a firefighter,” Coil said.

After school, Coil joined the military, where he became a combat engineer. In that position, he was responsible for building bridges in the field as well a setting deterrents in the enemy’s path.

“Keep them from getting to you and making sure you can get to them,” Coil said of his duty.

He received advice to take as much schooling as he could. He said it not only helped with promotions but also kept him from doing monotonous labor.
