Just about everyone — from residents to visitors — agrees that Sedona has a serious problem when it comes to traffic. But the $64,000 question is, what can be done? The Sedona Planning and Zoning Commission recommmended that the Sedona City Council proceed with a traffic study next year. Few drivers would disagree that traffic is a problem, but City Manager Tim Ernster said the study could cost at least $250,000.

During the Thursday, July 31, Sedona Planning and Zoning meeting, the commissioners unanimously approved making a request for the Sedona City Council sign off on a city-wide traffic study to be conducted in the next fiscal year. Studies have been done over the years but the most recent one was completed in 1996.

“A new study would one: Dust off the old studies, two: Update it to today’s world and three: Come up with a series of suggestions for future planning,” Commission Chairman Marty Losoff said.
City Engineer Andy Dickey said he believes a new traffic study is warranted, especially since one hasn’t been conducted in nearly 20 years. He said it will come down to money in the budget as far as how thorough it is and when it can be completed.

Losoff agreed and added, “We need to take it to the next stage and not only update it but commit to implementing some of these recommendations in the future. It’s not going to happen overnight but with time — over the next five to 10 years — we need to develop a budget and resources.”

City Manager Tim Ernster said the request for a citywide traffic study is something that would need to go through the budget process in the spring, and compete with other budget requests.

Another "study"....Sedona is becoming a mecca/cash cow for the outside 'consultant'. Why not save the 250+K (and it will definitely be '+' before it's done...) , 'dust off the old studies' and then DO SOMETHING about it! A good place to start is Downtown. Eliminate cross walks without traffic signals, eliminate blinking yellow lights, and/or put the cross walks underground....and put in underground parking facilities, charging fees to help defray the cost of these facilities; that's would be obvious place to start....and could be done without another useless 'study'. Put the money saved in forgoing that into making the changes.

Is it possible to time the traffic signals in a way that would allow a vehicle to get through West Sedona without hitting every red light?

We needed this study yesterday! We need to keep this town clean and with as less traffic as possible....We need public transportation that goes through our streets! Look at what a wonderful job lil ol Cottonwood had done!
We need to implement what was suggested in 1997 study and do something now....what good is a study that only would show we have grown more and gotten more congested?
Implement more of those suggestions and GO GREEN!
