Tracy Patterson is finding a way to spend more time in the United States.Tracy Patterson and her dog Katie spend their morning at Sunset Park on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Patterson and her husband spend their winters in Sedona, away from their home in Alberta, Canada, and look to increase the amount of time they spend here.

Patterson, an editor for a trade magazine in Alberta, Canada, said that she and her husband initially started coming to Sedona for the picturesque ideal of the red rocks, but now they find themselves spending more time here each winter because they like the weather and atmosphere.

“My husband was here about 20 years ago or something, and it just kind of stuck in his mind — you know, the red rocks and all,” she said. “We were looking for a place to go and we didn’t want a place that was too hot, because we like to hike and we had dogs. We figured this was just the perfect place to be because there’s tons of hiking and it’s not too hot. It just made sense.
“That’s what we did. We got away from the Alberta winter. That was three years ago.”
