Jeff Beech, left, foreman for Arizona Public Services, oversees the de-energizing of a power pole Wednesday Nov. 13, on Van Deren Road in Uptown. The pole was feeding power to another pole scheduled to be removed by his crew the next day. Eight Uptown power poles that failed core sample testing are scheduled to be replaced by the end of the year. In May, APS began replacing certain wooden power poles with metal ones. According to Linda Hendrickson, APS’s Verde Valley energy delivery manager, crews have been replacing the poles off and on since then with a total of 18 planned.

“They check a certain number of poles each year and identify the ones that need to be changed out,” she said.
