Nonprofit groups that feed the poor, support animal welfare or protect human rights are easily recognized as charities, but many “charitable” organizations that enjoy exemption from federal income tax don’t fit the generally-held image.A Single-Prop plane does a fly-by at Sedona Airport, practicing approaches. Many pilots use Sedona Airport to practice their landing skills to log touchdowns, with Sedona being one of the most thrilling airports to land at.

The Sedona-Oak Creek Airport Authority is one of those.

The SOCAA, which operates the Sedona Airport under an agreement with Yavapai County, is considered a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in part because it meets the criterion of “lessening the burdens of government.”

“The exempt purpose of the organization is to lessen the burden of Yavapai County government ... by providing airport facilities to a rural area not served by existing airport facilities,” the SOCAA notes on its IRS Form 990, which is the annual financial statement filed by 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable groups.

Available for public inspection, 990s offer a glimpse into the finances of tax-exempts and can help donors decide which charities to support based on how they allocate their resources. Find 990s online or stop by any tax-exempt organization and ask for a copy of its most recent filing.
