Arizona Department of Transportation plans to restripe Hwy. 89A on Wednesday, Aug. 15, and Thursday, Aug. 16.

Arizona Department of Transportation plans to restripe Hwy. 89A on Wednesday, Aug. 15, and Thursday, Aug. 16.

Restriping won’t include implementation of bicycle lanes, according to Sedona City Manager Eric Levitt.

Crews will work from 10 p.m. on Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday restriping from the ‘Y’ intersection to just past Dry Creek Road.

Bike lanes can’t be simply striped onto the highway, Levitt said. The pavement has to be redone, including relocating reflectors embedded in the pavement, before bike lane can be striped.

"It’s more than just a restriping project," Levitt said.

According to Levitt, restriping Hwy. 89A for bike lanes will cost at least $200,000. The city is working with ADOT to include bike lanes in the next repaving project. Levitt said repaving Hwy. 89A won’t happen in the next few years, but he is working with ADOT to possibly move the date up.

ADOT decided to work at night to cause as little traffic disruption as possible, according to ADOT spokesman Bill Pederson.

"We know this is a big tourist time of the year and we don’t want to create problems for the merchants," Pederson said.
