Story Shibambo 7-19-13 5Sometimes plans have to change at the last minute, as Karen Mack of the Sedona Public Library found when she was informed that Conductor Jack of The Zinghoppers had to cancel his kids’ music tour — which the library was to be a part of — due to an undisclosed injury.


Thankfully, Mack turned bad news into good when she brought in Sedona’s local South African drummer, Vusi Baba Shibambo, for an afternoon of rhythm and fun for kids and parents alike.


Starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, Mack and her unofficial student helper Dylan Jimenez were still pulling out more chairs as parents and their children quietly filled the Si Birch Community Room, while Shibambo himself made introductions and warmed up on his collection of African percussion instruments.


“My name, Shibambo, means ‘the keeper of the hides,’ the one who makes drums, the one who gathers all the skins in the village,” he said in his introduction. “Because there has to be somebody to make the drums and teach how to play the drums.” ....
