West Sedona School has a new addition on its campus, as a small weather station was recently installed on the roof of the school’s gymnasium.Darren McCormick, right, a teacher at West Sedona School, checks over the new weather station with Tennyson Wilson, his technical assistant, on the roof of the school gym on Thursday, May 8. Thanks to a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the school can use the weather station as a learning tool.

Purchased with a grant made possible by the Environmental Protection Agency and Prescott College, the station can track and record weather conditions in real time, and will be part of science curriculum related to water conservation.

WSS middle school science teacher Darren McCormick explained how he was able to secure the grant for purchasing the weather station.

“So, we got this through a grant with Prescott College. It was an EPA grant, and Prescott College received a bunch of these grants and they’re part of an umbrella program,” McCormick said. “So they went out and handed out grants to people who were seeking to do something related to water conservation. Not just schools, but other groups and businesses, too. I went to a conference last year in Prescott, wrote the grant, got the $5,000, and with that we were able to buy this weather station.”
