Volunteers around the Verde Valley will celebrate Senior Corps Week by doing what they do best — helping others.Marian Zikosky, left, a senior companion with the Verde Valley Senior Corps for 11 years, helps Jackie Hurley with a crafts project at the Country Care assisted living facility in Cottonwood. The pair also play cards and dominoes, and go for walks.

Senior Corps is for those 55 years and older who want to help their community using the wisdom, professional skills and experience they’ve gained over their lifetime.

There are three programs: Foster grandparents, senior companions and RSVP, which provides a range of volunteer opportunities such as helping victims of natural disasters, cleaning up the environment and sharing legal or financial expertise, among others.

Among the 25 Senior Corps volunteers in the Verde Valley is Veronica Blevins, a senior companion for Helen Linn, visiting her at her apartment in Verde Valley Manor in Cottonwood.
Linn, 88, moved to Arizona when she was five. Her family settled in Oak Creek Canyon, where her father farmed.
