Oak Creek Canyon is closed near Slide Rock State Park due to a working 450-acre wildfire which is rapidly growing. Sedona Fire District

Fire crews began evacuations in the early evening. Evacuations are along approximately a 2-mile stretch of area from Slide Rock State Park north toward Junipine, as well as the East Pocket Forest Service Lookout Tower. Evacuees north of the wildfire are being relocated to Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff.

Structures threatened include approximately 100 structures north of Slide Rock State Park, which include private homes as well vacation resort cabins and a Forest Service Lookout tower.

Emergency responders are turning back civilian vehicles at the entrance to the canyon near the Sedona Arts Center.

The Slide Fire is currently moving to the north, according to fire officials. On the west side the fire is held up without much spread. Fire activity is slowing toward the north and now concentrating on moving up the steep canyon walls. Resources are stationed above and below the fire. Smoke is heavy through Oak Creek Canyon and also visible from the Flagstaff area and will drift to the north; expect smoke to be noticeable along I-17 and in Flagstaff.

Resources responding or on scene include Sedona Fire District, 2 Hotshot crews, 1 heavy helicopter, 1 light helicopter, 1 air attack aircraft, 4 engines and at least three water tenders. Currently there are approximately 100 to 120 personnel working the fire.

Fire crews are staging at Slide Rock State Park and the Incident Command have called for three water tenders from the Flagstaff area.

Traffic is being kept out of the canyon as Sedona Police Department is working to move traffic southbound out of Uptown. State Route 89A is closed south from Flagstaff in the north from Sedona. The Arizona Department of Transporation has officially closed the canyon from mile post 376.40 -- 1.20 miles North of Purtymun Lane -- to mile post 382.50 -- 1.30 miles north of Slide Rock State Park.

The Slide Fire is 0% contained. The fire is reportedly human caused and under investigation.

No injuries to report.
