Tony Taylor has had a long career with NASA, and has now released a novel that uses his experiences navigating space as the basis for adventure, titled “The Darkest Side of Saturn: Odyssey of a Reluctant Prophet of Doom.”Author Tony Taylor is a former navigator for unmanned NASA missions, having visited each planet in the solar system. Additionally, Taylor is a U.S. Air Force veteran, and flew a F-4C Phantom fighter in 150 combat missions during the Vietnam War. Now residing in Sedona with his wife Jan, Taylor has released his second book, “The Darkest Side of Saturn.”

A Sedona resident, Taylor worked for more than 30 years as a navigator for unmanned space missions from the safety of a control room, where he gathered the background necessary to bring realism to his book.

“For the book we’re talking about, that came from my experience working with JPL — Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, [Calif.],” he said. “I worked for almost 25 years, and then another 10 years working with the KinetX aerospace company based in Tempe.”

During his time with JPL and KinetX, Taylor was able to navigate or consult on navigation to all eight of the planets in the solar system.

“I’ve been to every planet — metaphorically speaking, of course — we did the navigation and we’ve even been to Earth,” he said. “[After navigating Mercury in 2008], that was when I figured I could finally retire, after I had gotten my last one."
