Ruth Wicks and former Yavapai College Governing Board member Robert Oliphant held the first exploratory meeting to discuss issues with the college’s recently-adopted 10-year master plan on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood.Robert Oliphant gives a presentation on the possibility of the Prescott and Verde Valley campuses of Yavapai College cutting ties on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Mingus Union High School. Oliphant is a former member of Yavapai College’s Governing Board.

The meeting is part of a larger push by Wicks and Oliphant to potentially separate the Verde Valley region of Yavapai County from the current community college district and form a new district.

Oliphant resigned from the board in January over his disagreement with the 10-year plan, which proposes the closure and sale of the Sedona Center for Arts and Technology and relocation of the nursing program from the Verde Valley Campus in Clarkdale to Prescott Valley.

I love the Sedona Center for Arts and when I go to Sedona, I like to visit there. Sedona is a fine arts town. Closing the Sedona Center for Arts is like closing a part of the town.

My wife and I really like the Sedona Center for Arts. When we visit we like to spend some time there. Sedona is an arts town and closing it would be like removing a part of the town. Not a well thought out plan.
