It was one of the darkest days in the history of the United States — Sept. 11, 2001.First responders run for cover as one of the towers of the World Trade Center collapses in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. The fire truck on the left is one of two Fire Department of New York engines that tour the country in honor of the 403 firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty that day.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day, including 403 first responders. Of those, 343 were members of the Fire Department of New York, 23 New York Police Department officers and 37 Port Authority of New York & New Jersey officers.

As part of a national 9/11 education campaign, the Sedona Fire District will be hosting FDNY’s former Rescue 5 on Monday, Feb. 4, through Tuesday, Feb. 5. Rescue 5 is part of the Chicago-based nonprofit Rescue Remembrance Project, and serves as a mobile memorial to educate, honor and remember the events of 9/11. The project is currently operated by volunteer firefighters who donate their time with all donations and proceeds used for apparatus restoration, fuel, repairs and travel expenses.
