SFD’s Community Risk Management Division was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $3,098 from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Sullivan recognized an increased need in the community concerning car seats. More families reaching out to SFD for assistance, which has seen a 62 percent increase in the number of child safety seats inspected and installed since 2005.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide  — a leading organization in child safety — motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among children ages 1 through 19.

In addition to it being the law, the use of child car seats greatly reduce injuries and deaths, according to safety experts. But, those risks increase if the car seats are improperly installed. Or in some cases, parents can’t afford to purchase the number of car seats needed as their child grows.

But that may soon change for some Sedona-area families.

The Sedona Fire District’s Community Risk Management Division was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $3,098 from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Along with a $300 donation from a big box store in Cottonwood, the district was able to purchase 101 child passenger safety seats.
