Every Friday, beginning at 1:30 p.m., the quiet study room at the Sedona Public Library fills with upwards of 20 kids and one adult, all hunched over black-and-white checked boards, playing — of all things — chess.Kai Zimmerman and Syadrin DeMayo, right, play a heated chess match with other students at the Sedona Public Library on Friday, Oct. 18.

Organized and overseen by volunteer and Sedona resident Rick Okie, the group is primarily an elective class from Sedona Charter School, but come 2:30 p.m., opens up into an all-ages club where non-students are also welcome.

“It’s a partnership between the charter school and the library, so it’s open to everybody, we have home-schooled kids, charter school kids, and after 3:00 these kids will go get their lunch boxes and come back,” Okie said. “For the charter kids, it’s an elective, and most of the ones who start in it stay with it.”
