Frank Garrison admits that he was expecting the worst during those days following the mandatory evacuation of Oak Creek Canyon.Frank Garrison, center, owner of Canyon Market and The Butterfly Garden Inn, stands next to Brandon Swope, left, and Harrison Phillips, of the Lincoln National Forest’s Smokey Bear Ranger District out of New Mexico, on Wednesday, June 4. The Canyon Market is open for business but phones are still not connected in many parts of Oak Creek Canyon.

“When I left, I honestly thought I’d be returning to nothing,” said Garrison, the owner of the Butterfly Garden Inn and Canyon Market. “During the evacuation, my first priority was getting my family, our guests and employees out safely. We then secured everything and just hoped for the best.”

Like the rest of the businesses north of Slide Rock that were evacuated, Butterfly Garden suffered losses financially over the Memorial Day weekend. On top of that, they had just opened a new kitchen with its first use planned for the weekend. Most of the refrigerated food was lost.

“We were fully booked so every reservation had to be cancelled,” Garrison said. “But again, we’re still standing — it could have been a lot worse.”
Pointing to a group of firefighters, Garrison said, “These guys saved us.”
