A pair of visitors coming to Sedona for vacation say they’re lucky to be alive after hitting an elk in an area between Sedona and Cottonwood.California residents Andy Steinberg and Kristina Sado struck an elk on Saturday, May 3, along State Route 89A near Page Springs Road. Sado’s 2007 Honda CRV was deemed totaled by her insurance company but the two walked away from the accident with only minor injuries.

Andy Steinberg and Kristina Sado, both of Santa Monica, Calif., were on State Route 89A at around 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, when their Honda CVR struck a male elk, estimated to weigh between 400 to 500 pounds.

The accident happened near Page Springs Road, about 10 miles south of Sedona on what Steinberg described as a “dark stretch of road.”

“We were going about 65 mph and all of a sudden there was an elk standing in front of our car,” he said. “It was just a fraction of a second and we hit him — there was no time to apply the brakes.”
