For some Sedona couples, it’s been a long time coming.Susan Irvine, city clerk for Sedona, right, hands Tami Pivnick, left, and Susan Broude their certificate of registration of civil union Friday, Nov. 15, at City Hall. Sedona City Council approved civil unions on Sept. 24. Tami and Susan are the first Sedona residents that have received this certificate.

On Friday, Nov. 15, Tami Pivnick and Susan Broude became the first Sedona couple to register under the city’s new civil union ordinance, which was passed by the City Council on Sept. 24. Following a 30-day grace period, the ordinance became effective Oct. 24. Greg and Mark Luckey also registered as a civil union couple  Nov. 15, with more expected in the near future.

“We are honored to be the first Sedona couple to show our respect to Mayor [Rob] Adams and the council who supported this important ordinance,” Pivnik and Broude said in an email to the Sedona Red Rock News.

Despite getting legally married in California in October, Pivnik and Broude said they still felt strongly about having a civil union in Sedona.
