Sedona City Council approved a new design for the outdoor performance venue at Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park, nearly two years after the project was suspended when a dome collapsed during construction.Sedona City Council approved a design for the Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park submitted by the Phoenix firm of Westlake Reed Leskosky. A preliminary estimate puts construction costs at $800,000 but the city has budgeted $900,000 for design and construction. The city first approved plans for the park in 2001, named for Antonsen, a community advocate who died in April 2002.

Council voted 5-1 for the design submitted by the Phoenix firm of Westlake Reed Leskosky. Councilman John Martinez voted against it and Mayor Rob Adams was absent from the meeting on Wednesday, June 25.

Although the only question before council was whether to approve the design, Martinez — who described it as “beautiful” — said he voted against it because he was concerned that the operational plan would restrict its use.

With the design approved for the long-sought venue in Posse Grounds Park, the next step is for the city manager to negotiate a contract with Westlake Reed Leskosky for a more detailed design, according to a city document.

A preliminary estimate puts construction costs at $800,000.
