Story Cyber Hacking 7-19-13 5-Northern Arizona University has been presenting its annual Summer Seminar Series, and on July 17, the series came to Sedona’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre for a presentation by cybersecurity trainer Jane Ginn on the topic of “Protecting Yourself from Online Cyber-Criminals: Tips and Tools.”

The seminar is the first of NAU’s series to take place in Sedona, as part of a shift this year that has seen the program expand to other locations outside of the university’s Flagstaff campus.

Ginn, the managing director of a Sedona computer consulting firm and self-described “White Hat” in the war on cybercrime, provided an hour and a half of useful information for the predominantly local crowd. She explained what constitutes cybercrime and how users can protect themselves through various means, focusing mainly on online identity theft, bank fraud, phishing and the tools being used by what she calls “Black Hat” hackers — people who hack computers for criminal purposes.

The majority of the lecture involved Ginn bringing the audience up to speed on the jargon of cybersecurity and hacking, as well as examining  the broad scope of criminal hacking’s impact on the world, highlighting the known geographic sources of cybercrime and the difficulty in tracking this growing threat to personal privacy and security ....
