An early evening fire on Sunday, March 16, caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage and forced one Village of Oak Creek couple out of their home.A fire started in the garage of a home on Sunday, March 16, around 6:40 p.m., in the Village of Oak Creek on Cascabel Court. A tower of black smoke could be seen rising from the blaze, and neighbors from as far as a quarter-mile away reported hearing explosions, likely the gas tanks of the two vehicles and a generator in the garage. Sedona Fire District personnel were on the scene in a matter of minutes, working to keep the blaze in check, preventing it from spreading and ultimately smothering it.

At 6:49 p.m., Sedona Fire District crews responded to a house fire at 30 Cascabel Court. There, they battled the blaze for more than an hour.

“It just feels surreal — it doesn’t feel like it’s actually happening,” homeowner Hubert Gilli said the morning after the fire. “How it started, I don’t know yet but it did start in the garage. By the time I realized what was going on, the fire must have been burning for some time. The garage door opened by itself, which is what made me realize something was happening. I opened the door to the garage and it was just heat and black smoke.”
