It’s that time of year again, and I’m not talking about the holidays.

Election season is coming up and soon we could be juggling multiple races.

Sedona City Council candidates busily collect signatures for their petitions to run while Yavapai County confirms names on a recall petition for three Sedona Fire District Governing Board members.

Sedona Mayor Rob Adams and Councilmen Mark DiNunzio, Cliff Hamilton and Dennis Rayner’s seats become available on City Council.

SFD board Chairman Dave Blauert, Clerk Charles Christensen and member Phyllis Erick potentially face a recall election if enough valid signatures were collected to force them to campaign to keep their positions.

As these election proceedings follow their normal course, so will the Sedona Red Rock News.

We implemented our election policy to do our best to ensure fair and equal coverage of candidate in all elections.

We’ve used a consistent model over the past year and will continue to do so while also reviewing and adjusting details of the policy to better serve our readers.

Our goal and role as a newspaper is to present facts about each of the candidates and their opinions on important issues in a fair and balanced manner.

In the council and SFD races, candidates will have the opportunity to be interviewed for a profile written by our staff and given the opportunity to write an essay to be published in the Sedona Red Rock News.

As time and space allow, our staff will also cover issues residents feel are important to the future of the district.

We will not run letters to the editor supporting or endorsing candidates. We will also not permit candidates to write regular columns submitted by the agencies they serve.

Small-town elections can get ugly, but let’s all try to keep it clean in the best interests of the community.
