The holiday season is the time of year when we make our big gift purchases for our friends and family. It’s also the time of year when nonprofits and charities step up efforts to gather donations for their year-round projects and plans.

Managing Editor Christopher Fox GrahamAs you consider what gifts to buy for your loved ones, keep in mind those in our community, our country and around the world who are also in need.

It would be easier if we kept the less fortunate in mind 365 days a year, but the fact of the matter is that we often don’t. We don’t think we have the time or disposable income to give unless certain events remind us, like well-advertised fundraisers, donation sites at our favorite businesses, constant reminders on social media or the holiday season, when we are encouraged and motivated by others around us to share our wealth, time and spirit to their efforts.

Many charities, especially local ones, rely on these next few weeks for their entire annual budget. Others just need helping hands at this time to help raise awareness about what they do quietly and often thanklessly for the rest of the year.

As you read through our newspaper in the next few weeks, jot down the names of organizations you see in news stories, news photos, press releases, classifieds or advertisements and resolve to donate a few dollars to their effort.

Better yet, make a plan to help out a few of them over the coming year. Make plans to donate a few hours to the Humane Society of Sedona in January, deliver Meals on Wheels with the Sedona Community Center in March, give away old clothes to one of Sedona’s many thrift shops in May, donate your used books to the Sedona Public Library or to local schools in August and help serve a meal at one of our area’s many free Thanksgiving dinners in November.

Maybe you’ll only help out a charity a few times — every little bit helps. Maybe one of the nonprofits you’ll assist will become a lifelong passion.

Even if you’re too busy to help out in person, budget a comfortable amount every month and donate it to 12 different charities as the year rolls on.

Our nonprofits and all the people in our community and our world will appreciate any time or money you can spare.
