Just like a nurse checks a pulse to measure a man or woman’s vitals, so too can the health of community be determined by the health of its arts community.artscene cover

The vibrancy of Sedona’s art scene can be felt by the intensity of the local music scene and the attendance of community festivals, but the measure of its strength in the community is rooted in the art galleries.

In today’s issue of the Sedona Red Rock News, readers will find the Spring 2014 edition of artscene, our biannual publication highlighting the best galleries in the Sedona area. This is a full-color publication highlighting what each gallery has to offer locals as well as to visitors in the area.

Take a look through the publication and make a list of the galleries you should visit based on what piques your interest. The art forms included range from paintings and mixed-media wall art to pottery, carvings, sculptures and fine rugs.

Sedona has a long history of supporting the best of the arts, dating back to the 1960s. It was in a Sedona tavern that Cowboy Artists of America organization was born. Our city is home Northern Arizona’s oldest 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Sedona Arts Center. Both helped attract artists of all media and styles, a trend that continues today.

Galleries are the pillars of any art scene. They cater to curious locals and visitors, give artists a place to exhibit their newest masterpieces and provide a venue for collectors to pick out what pieces will decorate their homes and businesses.

Sedona’s galleries are as inspiring to local artists as they are to those of us who don’t wield a brush, chisel or potter’s wheel. Artists remain in a city that stimulates their creativity and offers them a place to showcase those creations and to share ideas with their peers. Through the galleries, artists meet one another for collaborations and future exhibits. The juxtaposition of two differing styles in a gallery can also highlight elements of an art piece one might overlook if the piece stood alone. For those of us who are slam poets, dancers and musicians, galleries offer a space to exhibit our talents alongside our friends in the visual arts.

Take a quiet Tuesday afternoon and visit a gallery you find interesting, or use the artscene as a guide for the next 1st Friday Gallery Tour. We hope you enjoy what you see in the publication and the galleries it highlights. By supporting the galleries that offer us a venue for fine arts, we help keep our arts community alive and strong.
