The ownership and entire staff of the Sedona Red Rock News would like to thank the residents of the Sedona area for allowing us to serve you for the past 50 years.

The Red Rock News original masthead as it appeared on our first edition, Oct. 3, 1963.Robert S. and Loretta Larson carefully considered their decision to start a newspaper in Sedona 50 years ago.

They watched several papers start and fail in this sleepy little Northern Arizona town, decades before red rock fever took hold of the country.

They weighed the risks and made a bet on the future, moving their family from Phoenix to create a "good, newsy community newspaper."

"We came to Sedona because we like it .... it's as simple as that," wrote Robert S. Larson in his first open letter to readers.

"The scenery is beautiful, of course, but only secondary. The people we have met helped and encouraged us so much ... we just had to come give it the ol' college try."

A guiding principle of the organization has always been to put the best interests of the people first.

In the last 50 years, the Sedona Red Rock News has been at the forefront of every major issue that contributed to the progress and welfare of this community, from incorporation to the creation of the Sedona Oak-Creek School District.

Thanks to the support of readers and local businesses, the Larson family gives back thousands of dollars to the community each year through its charitable giving and by its support of community organizations.

Faithful readers appreciate the quality of our product and know it is routinely recognized by the Arizona Newspapers Association for journalistic excellence.

Any person new to our city can read our pages and get a good sense of what the local community is all about. In our view, that's the single most important job of a quality community newspaper.

As the only newspaper of record in the city, the NEWS takes its responsibilities very seriously, with a clear understanding of its obligation to provide readers with the most accurate, objective, up-to-date community news and to support people and organizations that work to make Sedona a better place to live.

It's a family tradition we have honored for the past 50 years. It is a tradition that we will carry forward for many years to come.

Robert B. Larson
