After the Sedona Marathon in February, organizers announced it would not return for 2012 and was on “indefinite hiatus.”

Then, a new group announced it would host a marathon in 2012.

Then, the Sedona Marathon organizers said they would be back in 2013.

Then, the new marathon group killed its plans for a 2012 event.

Now, Sedona is left without a major running event for next year when there is plenty of room for two marathons in a city chock-full of athletes and with runners eager to visit.

I realize the Sedona Marathon is not a nonprofit organization, so like any business, competition isn’t favorable.

However, Sedona could easily support multiple events, and it should be a collaboration rather than a contest.

In fact, Sedona needs many more running events.

Community races, mostly 5Ks, bring residents together in a healthy and fun environment.

The number of participants may not be as high as the big events — and they certainly are money makers, but they complement the sense of community Sedona residents are always looking for.

The Coffee Pot Turkey Trot started in 2009 on Thanksgiving Day and held its second event in 2010.

A Shamrock Run used to kick off festivities before the St. Patrick’s Parade, but was canceled.

Sedona needs more races, both big and small.

Organizers from both marathon groups need to sit down and work together.

Two marathons in February, if they both get up and going, isn’t a good idea.

Instead they should stagger them — a fall and spring race or an early winter and late winter race would draw different crowds and maybe even some of the same people to both events.

The courses need to be different, which the second group announced was its original intention.

They could also pool resources when possible and help each other with permitting and staffing issues even if it means simply sharing advice.

It was never the intention, as I see it, of the second group to steal any of the Sedona Marathon’s thunder.

The couple who stepped up to fill the void log many miles running in races, and they simply didn’t want to see Sedona left without an event.

It appears now the city won’t host a marathon next year after all, even though the opportunity existed.

Hopefully the two groups can find common ground and support each other in the future in true community style.

It's a shame that the second group cancelled the 2012 event. I agree that Sedona needs more running events. My plan is to move to Sedona and I would welcome to run more events. There is definitely room for 2 marathon events and I would most likely attend both.

I'll do it.. And not just the Marathon. We can do several running events a year. We'll get kids and families involved and make these really great and bonding events. What a great opportunity. My 10yr old son and 12yr old daughter will be in there with me getting this done. I'm a runner, a radio talk show producer/host, and a major motivator of people to include a former supervisor of over 200 US Census workers in Yavapai County..<br />E-Mail me Trista

We currently have a 5k series in the planning and permitting stages for late 2011 and early 2012. We are also trying to organize a trail running series in the area as well for spring/summer 2012. We have an established business plan for another 2 events as well once we see how the first ones work out.

I don't understand Sedona's reluctance to embrace other activities to bring in a variety of tourists. Shopping for t-shirts and art is okay, but they are missing out on others. As the boomer age there will be greater demand for events such as this. Why wait...
