On your marks ... get set ... run!

For the eighth year, Sedona’s beautiful red rock country is about to be invaded, and not by aliens.

Sedona Red Rock News Managing Editor Trista Steers MacVittieRunners from all over the world are lacing up their sneakers and preparing to hit the asphalt — competing in the Sedona Marathon.

Athletes, young and old alike, will run anywhere from three to 26 miles Saturday, Feb. 2.

The eighth year of the marathon marks the second year its production came from the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, led by chamber President and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff, who is also the race director.

The chamber scrambled last year, taking the race over just in time to save if from demise when the former race organizer announced she wouldn’t be producing a 2012 marathon.

Seeing the need for a winter event and the tax dollars the race brings to Sedona, the chamber stepped in and ran with it. There wasn’t much time to make any changes last year other than the start and finish line which now turns the 10K around at the bottom of a giant hill — thanks.

This year, however, the chamber’s had a year to evaluate what worked last year, what didn’t and where tweaks need to be made.

We’ll see what Wesselhoff and her team have in store as the race that is becoming a great Sedona tradition continues.

The winner Saturday will be the Sedona community when one of its premiere events again brings people to the city.

However, the race isn’t only about winning. Many participants are running to simply participate in a community event while others are challenging only a single person, themselves.

Even non-runners are invited to share in the festivities of the race, which include an expo at Tlaquepaque arts and crafts village, pasta dinner and post-race party, among other activities.

For a complete list of events, see Sports & Recreation on Page 9A.

The Sedona Red Rock News wishes those participating residents good luck and welcomes those who made the trip to our city for the race.

Don’t forget to look up while you’re plugging away — the mesmerizing red rocks might just pull you through.
