Fighting cancer isn’t a battle teenagers or young adults should be faced with.

They should be worried about paying rent at their first apartment, who will take them to prom, the latest new music and what they want to be when they grow up.

Unfortunately, we’ve brought you the stories of young Sedona residents faced with fighting for their lives long before they should be called upon to do so, and one of them recently fell victim to the deadly disease.

Amanda Coughlin, who died in March, will live on through a benefit set up in her name, Love 4 Amanda.

The first Love 4 Amanda event was held a year ago when she began her fight.

This year, Coughlin will be there in spirit to help organizers raise money to support other young residents battling cancer.

Sadly, Coughlin’s isn’t the only case of youth cancer in our community.

We brought you the story of Ashley Hook a few months ago, a Sedona Red Rock High School student fighting ovarian cancer.

We’ve heard there are others in Sedona and the Verde Valley who’ve also recently received a staggering diagnosis.

People in their late teens and early 20s aren’t supposed to think about cancer.

They should be dreaming about their future, enjoying their youth and living the carefree life so many of us were fortunate to experience at their age.

On Thursday, April 12, the community is invited to come together and show its support for youth fighting cancer in Coughlin’s memory. Organizers hope to help other families dealing with this tragedy by raising money for their benefit.

May her spirit fuel another’s fight, and may the love for Coughlin trickle down to other young people looking for strength and support during their battle.
