On your marks ... get set ... run!

For the seventh year, Sedona’s beautiful red rock country is about to be invaded, and not by aliens.

Runners from all over the world are lacing up their sneakers and preparing to hit the asphalt running to compete in the Sedona Marathon.

Larson Newspapers Managing Editor Trista Steers MacVittieAthletes, young and old alike, will run anywhere from 3 to 26 miles Saturday, Feb. 4.

The production of the 2012 marathon is a triumph in itself after the former owner announced last year she would not be putting the event on again.

Luckily, the Sedona Chamber of Commerce stepped in and saved the event from extinction buying the rights to the race and the responsibility that comes with it.

Right about now, chamber President and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff may be wondering what she got herself into based on the amount of hard work she’s put in, but she, like us, will be happy she and her staff stepped up to the plate.

With the help of Sedona Marathon organizing veteran Mindy Mendelsohn, the marathon will take place Saturday — even if there are a few minor hitches.

The real winner will be the Sedona community when one of its premier events again brings people to the city.

However, the race isn’t only about winning. Many participants are running to simply participate in a community event while others are challenging only a single person, themselves.

Even non-runners are invited to share in the festivities of the race, which include an expo at Tlaquepaque arts and crafts village, pasta dinner and postrace party among other activities.
