I love getting a letter in the mail. A handwritten letter from a loved one or friend on a birthday or anniversary means a great deal more than just a text message or Facebook post.

I keep all the personal letters and love letters I’ve received inside an old, metal first aid kit under my bed. In case of a house fire, I’ll grab that, my laptop and as many chapbooks of slam poetry as I can fit in my arms.

News Editor Christopher Fox GrahamLikewise, I love getting letters to the editor. Nowadays the “letter” is actually an email, but I love when residents tell us their thoughts on an issue, opinions on one of our news stories or editorials, or comments on local or regional political issues. I even enjoy reading and publishing letters disagreeing with my point of view.

A letter to the editor tells us our stories are being read and discussed. They also tell us our readers feel so passionate about an issue that they’ll take the time to sit down and write a response, be it a critique, thanks, agreement or disagreement on a story or news item.

On Friday, June 21, I had so many letters in my queue, I decided to not only run a scheduled guest perspective on Page 4A, but also an entire additional page of letters on Page 5A. I still had half a dozen letters left over for upcoming issues.

Generally, the summer is slow when it comes to letters to the editor, so when I can fill our paper to the brim with readers’ opinions, I know we’re doing good work and we have readers who are concerned about their community and want to use our Page 4A forum to express their ideas to the rest of the city.

The rules for our letters are relatively simple:
