Sedona Red Rock High School seniors gathered Tuesday, May 8, to collect their college cash before they graduate in two weeks.

One scholarship alone, a full-ride for students who meet grade point average and Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards criteria, brought approximately $720,000 to Sedona students.

The Arizona Board of Regents High Honors Tuition Waivers will pay for 15 hard-working students to go to any of the three state universities for four years.

Locally, Sedona’s service groups, residents and businesses take care of our youth and step up when it’s time to send them off into the world.

The list of scholarships given goes on and on, and what really made it meaningful was the number of people who took the time to attend the ceremony and personally present scholarships.

The format of the ceremony creates an environment in which the donor and recipient can get to know each other, and the graduate can share his or her hopes and dreams for the future.

The Sedona Red Rock News’ recipient this year has a bright future in photography, and I’m cheering for photojournalism as her speciality.

Gwen Deierling was selected to receive the journalism scholarship this year based on her work on the school’s yearbook and an internship in the beginning journalism class where she helped teacher Maureen Barton show the underclassmen the ropes.

Looking around the school’s gym, I recognized many of the recipients from the pages of our newspaper.

There were athletes, actors, musicians, top scholars, homecoming royalty and teen philanthropists who made their make on their school and this city during their time here.

On Tuesday, the community thanked them by giving them a tool they need to build a bright future.

Now, we can only hope some of them return in the future to repay the community that supported them by working here and raising their own families in Sedona.

Until then, congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients for a job well done.
