Residents must return mail-in ballots by Tuesday, March 13, to vote in the Sedona City Council election and on home rule.

Monday evening, March 12, the Sedona Red Rock News will bring our readers the unofficial election results at redrocknews.com.

Sedona Red Rock News Managing Editor Trista Steers MacVittieUp to this point, we’ve brought our newspaper readers the only consistent election coverage available.

Coverage included candidate profiles and essays written by each of the four candidates, along with stories about the alternative expenditure limitation, or home rule, which is Proposition 420.

If you missed the candidate profiles or want to take another look before casting your ballot, they are currently available on our website.

Once we’ve done our job, the rest is up to the voters.

If you’re going to vote, make sure you know what you’re voting for.

An uniformed voter aimlessly checking boxes is much more dangerous than a resident electing to leave a section blank because he or she isn’t familiar with the issue.

The easiest way to combat the problems of aimless voting or lack of participation — be informed.

It’s our duty as citizens of the United States and residents of Arizona and Sedona to educate ourselves on the issues at hand and candidates running for office, which allows us to take an active role in the democratic process.

Obviously, not everyone chooses to be involved, and they have the freedom to make such a decision.

However, when city decisions don’t reflect those people’s values or beliefs they have only themselves to blame.

My motto has always been if you don’t vote, you can’t gripe.

So, at the very least, be sure to cast your ballot to earn the right to complain if the city heads in what you consider the wrong direction.
