The big news story of July 2, 1776, was a vote by the Second Continental Congress to approve separating its 13 North American colonies from Great Britain.

Two days later, a committee presented the Declaration of Independence to the congress, formally listing the colonies’ numerous reasons for separation. The members approved the document, and the United States of America was born.

News Editor Christopher Fox GrahamAs Americans prepare for their country’s 237th birthday, those of us who bring you local news also want to watch fireworks, roast burgers and hotdogs, and enjoy time with our friends and family in the Verde Valley.

The week before Thursday, July 4, Larson Newspapers’ busy employees will be working double-time to make that possible.

We’ve moved up our deadlines 24 hours, so make sure you get your news items, press releases, calendar listings and advertisements to us well before we are ready to put the paper together.

Our staff will take off Thursday, July 4.

Early deadlines go into effect Thursday, June 27, and affect the Wednesday, July 3, editions of the Sedona Red Rock News, The Camp Verde Journal, Cottonwood Journal Extra, and the Friday, July 5, edition of the Sedona Red Rock News and the The Scene.

Our altered deadlines for the Fourth of July holiday are:

n For the Wednesday, July 3, Sedona Red Rock News, The Camp Verde Journal and Cottonwood Journal Extra, news items, press releases and letters to the editor are due by 5 p.m., Thursday, June 27

n For the Friday, July 5, edition of Sedona Red Rock News and The Scene, news items, press releases and letters to the editor are due by 5 p.m., Friday, June 28.

Our newsrooms in Camp Verde, Cottonwood and Sedona will be closed all day July 4 and will reopen Friday, July 5. Deadlines return to normal as of July 5.

As is always true with submissions, anything received after our deadlines won’t appear in the newspaper.

Around a holiday, more than ever, it’s important to get your advertisements, press releases and letters to the editor in early so they have a better chance of making it into print.
