People across America got up extra early this morning — or quite possibly didn’t go to sleep — to stand in line to get the best deals stores have to offer on Black Friday, Nov. 23.

Black Friday signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season and merchants large and small use the day to encourage patrons to start spending.

Sedona Red Rock News Managing Editor Trista Steers MacVittieIn Sedona, shops will likely see an increase in shoppers today, but it won’t include stampedes for the hottest toy or fights over the last $10 sweater.

The lack of big box stores in Sedona creates a different type of shopping atmosphere — one in which a shopper is looking for a one-of-a-kind, personalized gift for someone special in a calm, festive atmosphere.

The absence of big box stores in Sedona cuts down on the Black Friday chaos, but it doesn’t mean you can’t find the perfect gift on an Uptown, West Sedona or Village of Oak Creek shelve.

The purpose behind gift giving seems to have shifted back to one of more meaning. It’s no longer about quantity but instead about quality, which is exactly what shoppers will find in a Sedona or Village shop.

The Sedona shopping atmosphere is also much more enjoyable and less stressful than what residents and visitors will find in another city.

Stroll the sidewalks of Uptown or the State Route 179 corridor with a hot drink in hand or visit a West Sedona or Village shop with ease rather than urgency.

The best holiday gifts aren’t those that are mass-produced making it possible for the majority of the country to open the same thing on Christmas morning, and that’s not what you’ll find in Sedona.
