It was a long and treacherous venture for Canadian tourist Elise Heon, 50, who spent the night stranded on a ledge in Oak Creek Canyon after becoming lost on a day hike.

Tom Gebler, right, an Oak Creek Canyon homeowner, was the first to make contact with missing Canadian hiker Elise Heon around  8 a.m. on Friday, April 5. Heon went missing after going on a hike on the morning of Thursday, April 4.On Thursday, April 4, around 10:30 p.m. Coconino County sheriff’s deputies, detectives and search and rescue personnel responded to a report of a missing tourist. Heon, a pediatric ophthalmologist, was staying at Junipine Resort in Oak Creek Canyon. According to employees at the resort, Heon was scheduled to check out at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Staff found her wallet, identification, cell phone, clothing, eyeglasses and iPad still in the room. They reported no signs of forced entry nor foul play. That morning, Heon reportedly had asked a resort employee about nearby hiking trails in the canyon. She also had not checked into another Sedona area resort, which was her next destination.
