The Invest in Education campaign held a public forum on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa to inform Sedona residents about the Sedona-Oak Creek School District’s upcoming budget increase override and provide arguments in favor of the increase from members of the community.

David Lykins, superintendent of the Sedona-Oak Creek School District, fields questions on Wednesday, Sept. 25, during the public forum for SOCSD’s upcoming budget override. The override, which is the only item on the 2013 ballot for Sedona, would keep the district from losing more than $900,000 in funding over the next three years after the previous override was voted down in November 2012.

SOCSD Superintendent David Lykins was present for the event and explained how the district has made cuts to its current budget, which included cutting down hours for multiple positions at all three schools as well as not replacing employees who retired at the end of the 2012-2013 school year.

Stop asking the citizens for more money! Work within your means and cut the fat salaries (administrative) during the hard times! That's what a business owner has to do....

Schools the size of RRHS can have an athletic director/vice principal combined position. I have worked at such a district and it worked beautifully. The public wants to see the district make an honest attempt at cutting costs.

Teachers should be asked to teach different subject areas. Special education teachers do it every day! The principal should also teach a class. Ths would ensure that they won"t lose contact with the "teaching world" once they enter the "administrative abyss".
