Al Judge spent years as a mechanical engineer, and helped in the design of the Lunar Surface Drill used during NASA’s Apollo missions, but now he’s doing something he really enjoys as a photographer. On Friday, Sept. 6, Judge’s work was put on display at the Pop-Up! Sedona Gallery for a First Friday reception, alongside metal sculptor Richard Barnwell.

“Restrooms” by photographer Al Judge was taken at the Gold King Mine in Jerome a few weeks ago. Judge converted it to a simulated oil painting because he said he feels people are more accepting of highly saturated colors in a painting than a photo. Judge’s photos can be seen at the Pop-Up! Sedona Gallery on 671 State Route 179.“The wonderful thing about Sedona is the wonderful art community we have here,” Judge said. “I always liked [Pop-Up! Gallery director] Jim Peterson. I really wanted to be in a gallery, and somewhere along the line I saw an ad for the Pop-Up! Gallery, and when I saw Jim Peterson was a member — because I liked his work — I went to talk to him.”

Judge said that he has enjoyed the process and appreciates all the encouragement he has received from others. “It’s really such a supportive community we have here,” he said.
