Three years ago, Prop 100 was passed to help get Arizona back on its feet during one of the toughest economic periods in the country’s history. But on Friday, May 31, the additional 1 cent state sales tax came to an end.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer“Today, a tax is going to expire,” Gov. Jan Brewer said during a news conference. “But that’s not all. Today we can look back on this tax and know that it did its job.”

Proposition 100, which was passed by the state legislature on Feb. 4, 2010, increased the state sales tax from 5.6 to 6.6 percent. Brewer said the increase raised $2.7 billion with two-thirds of the money going to education and the remainder divided amongst public safety and health and human services such as Medicaid, behavioral health and corrections.
