The city of Sedona is now the owner of a prominent piece of land, but council and staff are still discussing its potential use, which they have not yet made officially public.

The Sedona City Council unanimously approved the purchase of two parcels located at 4205 and 235 West State Route 89A. The land is located at the intersection of Upper Loop Road in front of Sedona Red Rock High School.

The purchase price was $2,150,000.

The item appeared on the council’s consent portion of the agenda and there was no discussion by council or staff. Council did, however, discuss the purchase in executive session on June 8.

Following the meeting, City Manager Karen Osburn gave some insight as to what the property could be used for.

“At this time no decisions about the ultimate use of the property have been made,” she said. “However, one likely use would be related to future transit. This location lends itself well to creating an opportunity for visitors coming into the city via [State Route] 260/Cottonwood to leave their vehicles and use transit to reach other destinations in and around the city.”

A city report states the total acreage of the two parcels is 1.9 acres, and the property is currently vacant and commercially zoned. The city has been in negotiations with the owner and has reached terms. The purchase price has been agreed upon with seller Three M.C. LLC, along with a closing date of Wednesday, June 30. Adequate budget capacity is available, the report states, in the capital improvement accounts to cover the cost of the land acquisition.
