Despite losing a tough one to rival Estrella Foothills High School [7-3] in the 3A West Region Tournament championship game Saturday, April 30, the Scorpions are ready for the state tournament this weekend.

Having lost its third consecutive game to Estrella Foothills this spring, the Sedona Red Rock High School softball team was surprisingly upbeat and focused at practice this week.

The first hurdle Sedona will face Friday, May 6, when the 3A conference state playoffs begin, is No. 4 Safford High School.

All 3A state tournament games for softball will take place at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix. First pitch between Sedona and Safford is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

Safford finished the regular season with a 14-2 record in Arizona Interscholastic Association power point games, including an eight-game winning streak to end the schedule.

The Scorpions had a nine-game winning streak going before the loss to the Wolves on Saturday, but winning nine of its last 10 isn’t so bad according to third-year Sedona Head Coach John Brown.

“We’ve done a good job this year handling our business; now we need to focus on state and the task at hand,” Brown said.

Sedona ended the regular season with a 21-10 overall record. It is the first time since 1999 the Scorpions have won 20-plus games in a season and the ladies in black and purple hope to extend that record Friday.

If the Scorpions can get past Safford, they would more than likely face No. 5 Santa Cruz High School on Saturday, May 7, in round two.
