Friends watch as Sedona Fire District crews transport a 16-year-old boy to a waiting medical helicopter Thursday, April 21, at the Grasshopper Point parking area. The Sedona Red Rock High School sophomore injured himself while cliff jumping in Oak Creek Canyon and sustained head injuries. He was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center and later released.According to witnesses, a number of students from Sedona Red Rock High School were cliff jumping in the area when the boy fell. The drop into the water at Grasshopper Point is estimated to be roughly 30 feet. The boy has been released from the hospital.

Gary Johnson, deputy fire marshal and public information officer with the Sedona Fire District, said the boy was assisted by others who happened to be in the area.

“After hitting the water, some local bystanders actually jumped in to rescue the young man from possible drowning,” Johnson said. “Once crews got on the scene, he was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Angel 3 with head injuries.”

Grasshopper Point is located at the base of Oak Creek Canyon and is visited by locals and tourists alike, due to the area’s picnic amenities and shaded swimming area. Cliff jumping and diving in the area are discouraged, due to the unforeseen hazards beneath the water. Depths in the swimming area vary. The site is located roughly two miles north of Sedona.
